Nestled in a 1930s blue cottage in the center of Laguna Beach is Sourced, A California Collective. This unusual co-op is a quaint boutique in front with small work spaces in the back, where tenants offer services such as graphic design, photography, and interior and floral design.
In the boutique, a host of vendors—including Macalistaire 1850—sell handmade soaps, candles, and jewelry, along with vintage clothing, housewares, and furniture. Rachiel Macalistaire, 47, who owned shops by the same name in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, and friend and co-op manager Michelle Mercado, 28, co-founded Sourced in 2013.
The space was planned as a rental company, but Mercado, above, saw more potential for it. “I was originally going to offer Rachiel’s incredible vintage pieces for party rentals and staging, and at the same time start my own event-planning business,” she says.“Instead, we offer a collaborative space where small business owners can grow, whether it’s by having an office for their work or by selling their wares in our retail shop.”
The boutique sells scarves by the Los Angeles-based LOV Project ($129), soaps from Costa Mesa’s By the Lite of the Moon ($8 per bar), and beaded bracelets by Newport Beach-based Together by Gravity ($95).
