Best of 2011 INSIDERS ONLY!
Our list of 101 favorite things includes racy lingerie, decadent desserts, and killer margaritas. Here’s just a taste of our much-anticipated annual list of Orange County’s best happy hours, Vietnamese sandwiches, cool jazz, amazing art, and more!

Features
Finding Cool in Death Valley
The late Eva Slater, one of Orange County’s most promising abstract painters, helped create the Hard Edge art movement in the 1950s and ’60s. While it became one of the county’s most important exports to the world of international art, Slater walked away from the scene to find her own path. It led her to Death Valley, where, during her final decades, she traced abstract geometric design to an unlikely source.
by Ann Japenga

Creative Drill
Andrew Myers makes fine art using tools you probably have around the house. Still, the former president of Laguna College of Art + Design calls him “one of the most advanced and creative artists in Laguna Beach.”
by Anastacia Grenda

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Follies”
Society Editor Gloria Zigner’s monthly recap of the county’s charity events, including the 14th annual CHOC Follies fundraiser that netted more than $500,000 for CHOC Children’s.

Coast Lines
Neighborhood visits Trabuco Canyon, the land that time forgot. The O.C. Answer Man explains the county’s own Loch Ness monster. Nibbles & Bits deconstructs goi cuon, that irresistible, introductory delight of Vietnamese cuisine. In a special kids’ edition of Books, Villa Park mom Shana Connell Noyes talks about “Get to Know Your Kid.” Trade Secrets introduces you to surf forecaster Adam Wright, and we offer a Perfect Getaway to the sequoias of Three Rivers. We also have the Stat Sheet on the Laguna Beach stylist who once handled the British royal family’s hair, reconnect with “Waltons” actress and O.C.’s own Mary McDonough, chart how being a celeb can help get you the key to a city, and find contemporary homes among the county’s sea of Mediterranean houses in On the Market.

O.C. Style
Exotic accessories lend a hint of the untamed to summer’s colorful clothes, including an unforgettable Christian Dior tribal-looking Tahiti lambskin-and-suede sandal, a $31,300 eagle-wing bracelet from Carrera y Carrera, and a tiered feather necklace from Lanvin. Plus, meet Magic Johnson’s custom tailor, and the women behind Harvey Girls Gallery boutique in Seal Beach.
