Overlooked Objects That Have Deadly Significance

Mission San Juan Capistrano owns a sinister relic: a silver crucifix with a bullet hole over the body of Christ. A San Juan Capistrano resident, involved in an altercation unrelated to the church, visited the chapel to calm down, but instead shot off his gun. One bullet hit the crucifix and destroyed the figure’s halo. He offered restitution, but a church official decided to leave the hole as an illustration of the perils of temper unrestrained.
