Be on the lookout

Two things to keep an eye on:

1. Fancy food purveyors Dean & DeLuca have jumped on board the online wine wagon with Your California Wine Source. Not an app but a website that also acts as a wine club. You can read about the various wine regions, although there isn’t much there at the present, only 11 wineries in the Central Coast. (Paso alone has 250). Top picks from their wine director, events, and other headings are pretty sparse but should be populated soon. The main thrust is the sale of wine. And the biggest promise is that they’ll offer cult wines. Didn’t see any Screaming Eagle yet. But their top-flight “Cult Club” is $4,000 a year for quarterly shipments of hard-to-acquire wines. I can’t afford it, but if you buy in, please let me know what it’s like.

2. Watch for wines from New Zealand in your local supermarket. Fernz, a label that’s making a big push into California will have a tasting at Bristol Farms in Newport from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 16. Their rep says they compare favorably to St. Supery, Schug, Cupcake, and other labels in their $15-plus price range. Kiwi wines might surprise you. The country is more boutiquey when it comes to wine than their neighbor Australia. Of course they have a great reputation for sauv blancs, but Fernz will be pouring a chardonnay and a pinot too.—Anne Valdespino
