'The Great Food Truck Race' Season 5: No Experience Required is the Only Requirement

O.C.'s had a long and special relationship with the show―can we keep it going?

If you’ve ever idly dreamed about entering “The Great Food Truck Race,” here’s a little encouragement—the Food Network is casting season five. Tyler Florence will again host, but this time there’s a new restriction that actually opens things up a bit: The production company wants only cooks with exactly zero experience running a food truck. The contest amounts to on-the-job training, because the grand prize remains, of course, a food truck.

Orange County and “The Great Food Truck Race” have a special relationship that goes way back to the first season, when Fullerton-based Crepes Bonaparte was eliminated early on. But in season two, which pretty much put the show on the reality-TV map, O.C. superstars Lime Truck and Seabirds competed—with Lime Truck dominating, cruising to a win that set owner Jason Quinn up to open Playground in downtown Santa Ana. Even without winning, Seabirds owner Stephanie Morgan’s already successful vegan concept got a boost, and she’s just retired her trusty truck to concentrate on brick-and-mortar Seabirds Kitchen in The Lab, opened last fall.

You can read about how to apply here. I’d love to see an all-O.C. cast—and we’ve got enough cooking talent, amateur to pro, to make it happen.

  • Food Lovers Guide - Vanilla

Plain vanilla extract is fine for large-batch baking, but vanilla snobs like to play with other varieties, including the skinny, leathery beans. We won’t delve into the classic Mexican-versus-Tahitian debate, except to say we like Tahitian for creamy concoctions and the bolder Mexican in concert with dark chocolate. Find plump, vacuum-sealed beans of both varieties at Surfas Culinary District. Read More
