Mission San Juan Capistrano owns a sinister relic: a silver crucifix with a bullet hole over the body of Christ. A San Juan Capistrano resident, involved in an altercation unrelated to the church, visited the chapel to calm down, but instead shot off his gun. One bullet hit the crucifix and destroyed the figure’s halo. He offered restitution, but a church official decided to leave the hole as an illustration of the perils of temper unrestrained. At least, that’s one explanation. 26801 Ortega Highway, 949-234-1300, msjsanjuan.com
In a national survey released this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation tagged more than 50 local bridges as “structurally deficient,” which, we have been assured, is a technical term that includes such deficiencies as needing a paint job; it doesn’t mean that they’re not safe.
Black Star Canyon has a reputation as a haunted spot, but it really should be known for its spectacular seasonal waterfall. The 6½-mile hike is glorious, but strenuous. It entails following the creek bed, wading through water, dodging poison oak, and climbing a couple of boulders. From the parking area, follow the paved road for half a mile, then turn right onto the dirt road.

Cool factor: Probably Orange County’s most dramatic cave landscape. The entrance takes you into the rocky cliffs at this South Laguna beach. Visit during low tide when access is easier and safer.
Where to find: Concrete stairs at Ninth Avenue and South Coast Highway to Thousand Steps Beach, walk to the south end

On Aug. 20, 1892, an armed, hooded mob in Santa Ana absconded with jailed murder suspect Francisco Torres. They pinned a crude sign saying “change of venue” to his chest, and lynched him at Fourth and Sycamore streets. Torres, a laborer arrested in the killing of his employer at a South County ranch, had claimed self-defense. No one was ever held accountable in the notorious incident, and nothing at the intersection acknowledges it ever happened.
