Hike With Karin Klein!
Karin Klein, author of the book “50 Hikes in Orange County” and our October “Great Hikes” cover story, leads guided hikes to introduce locals to the wilderness areas of Orange County.
At 8 a.m. the first Sunday of most months, she leads hikers along the Laurel Loop Trail in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (No. 3 on our list of 10) for the Laguna Canyon Foundation. That hike is titled “How Native Americans Used the Local Wilderness.” She describes it as “a slow interpretive hike about edible and useful wild plants.” Parking costs $3, and the foundation asks for a $2 donation. To sign up, visit lagunacanyon.org, click on “Public Programs,” and search by the title.
Also, at 8 a.m. on the third Sunday of some months starting in November, Klein leads a 2- to 3-mile hike to the San Juan Hot Springs and into Cold Spring Canyon. This is the only way the public can legally avoid the 14-mile hike to see the hot springs that she described in the her cover story. There is no fee, for parking or the hike. Sign up at ocparks.com/caspers. Just click on“Events” and then look for the month you want to attend.
